Brussels

Visiting Brussels is never done lightly.

In Brussels, one finds chip shops on every corner, sometimes even two opposite each other, because choosing remains difficult. The Atomium rises above everything except the clouds. Many people say Manneken Pis is smaller than expected, but no one complains about the waffles on sale everywhere. Once I got lost there among European officials who were all in a hurry, while I was still looking for the best hotel in Brussels, but all I found was a café with a name I have now forgotten. Those who ask for a map sometimes get a smile, sometimes a shrug. But getting lost is part of the deal, in this city.

Popular things to do and visit in Brussels

Brussels serves up a colourful mix of things to do for those who have time, and even for those who don't. The Grand Place counts more pigeons than tourists on wet days, but on sunny moments everyone is vying for a spot on the terrace. I myself once stood for an hour looking at a giant comic book wall, while a local explained to me that Tintin is at least as famous here as chocolate. In museums, you hear a cacophony of languages, sometimes Dutch, sometimes something similar. Not everyone likes the Zinneke statue, but it does have its own scarf in winter.

The best hotel in Brussels, according to some people, is near a tram stop, according to others right above a nightclub. The truth lies somewhere in the middle, like everything here. For those who want to get to know the city, it is a good idea to just walk around, even if your shoes won't do. One can get lost among the comic shops, be mistaken about the number of chocolate shops, yet always end up at the same chip shop. Don't forget to bring your umbrella, as the weather changes faster than a politician's mind. Have fun - and if you get lost, ask a statue, at least they always listen.
