Brazil

Brazil, you should visit.

People call Brazil a travel destination with popular things to do or visit, but that doesn’t cover the half of it. Once, I spent a morning trying to buy a coconut with my half-remembered Portuguese and my very full wallet, only to find out I was in line for bus tickets. The best hotel in Brazil might have someone at reception who wears flip-flops to work, or maybe not; depends on the tide. You can dance, you can eat, you can get lost and usually find yourself at a street party, right next to a grandma selling pastel out of a mysterious cart. The locals have mastered the art of asking three questions in one sentence. Try keeping up, it’s a sport like football here. Or is it futbol?

Start your adventure with a sunrise walk along Copacabana, unless the snooze button wins—then try sunset instead. Some folks say the best view is from the top of Sugarloaf Mountain, but my friend swears it’s from the bottom, ice cream in hand, watching everyone else climb. Local markets sell everything from rubber flip-flops to dried fish; ask for a taste, get a story, and probably a new friend named Paulo who claims he knows the best hotel in Brazil (he might).

Jungle tours in the Amazon come with rain, mud, and things that buzz, but also with guides who can spot a sloth before you even know there’s a tree. Sometimes, you’ll return to your room, only to find a towel folded into the shape of a capybara. Rio street artists paint murals that seem to move when you look away, and samba dancers practice steps that seem easy until you try them—then you realize your left foot is suddenly your right, or maybe that’s just me, ha. When in doubt, follow the sound of laughter; it usually leads to something good, or at least to someone selling grilled cheese on a stick.
