Frankfurt
Frankfurt, a city that once tricked me into thinking the Main river was only for ducks and not for humans, offers plenty to chew on for the curious traveler. You might see skyscrapers, but you might also see apple wine served in a blue mug that looks like it came from your grandmother's cupboard. People rush past, some with briefcases, some with pretzels. Nobody talks about the time the tram stopped because a goose refused to move, but it happened, and it was probably the highlight of that day. The best hotel in Frankfurt might be the one closest to the Römer, or maybe the one with the breakfast that serves eggs at midnight, if you're lucky. Popular things to do include visiting the Städel Museum, which is never as quiet as you expect, or climbing the Main Tower, where the wind will try to steal your hat. Just don't ask for directions to "Old Town" without a map, unless you enjoy walking in circles.

Travel destination popular things to do or visit: Best hotel in Frankfurt and more
Frankfurt offers a blend of the old and the new, but sometimes the old hides behind the new, so you have to squint a bit. Those who wander the Zeil, the shopping street, may find themselves lost in a sea of bags and shoes, only to stumble on a sausage stand that seems to know everyone's name. Locals call it the city where bankers wear sneakers and artists drink coffee at the train station, which is actually true on Thursdays. The Palmengarten, which has more green than my neighbor's entire wardrobe, can become a jungle if you take a wrong turn at the cactus section. Once, I saw a man reading a newspaper under a palm tree, pretending he was in Miami, or maybe just hiding from the rain.
When searching for the best hotel in Frankfurt, some travelers pick the one with a view of the skyline, others the one with pillows that don't swallow your head. Just try not to book the hotel next to the nightclub, unless you plan to dance until 6am and then ask for an early breakfast. Museumsufer, the museum bank, lines up like a row of ducks along the river, except these ducks have paintings and ancient coins. If you're looking for popular things to do, try a boat tour, but beware of seagulls with an appetite for snacks. Frankfurt never sleeps, except for the bakeries, which close exactly when you crave a pretzel at midnight. Nobody said travel was fair.
