Pula
Some call Pula the place where flip-flops meet Roman stones and where your gelato melts before you can even snap a photo. There is a market square where old men play chess and forget the time, or maybe just pretend to. You can sit on a bench and watch a parade of bicycles go by, none of them in a hurry, all of them with baskets full of groceries or sometimes a dog. If you ask where to find the best hotel in Pula, someone might point vaguely west and say, 'over there, near the olives,' which is only slightly helpful if you are directionally challenged or allergic to olives. But that's the charm, I guess.

Popular things to do or visit in Pula and the best hotel in Pula
The Roman amphitheater stands with holes from ancient battles and newer graffiti that says 'Ciao!' in blue spray paint. People come for concerts, or just to stand in the shade and imagine gladiators, although most of them end up imagining ice cream instead. There is a legend that says a cat once snuck into the arena and never left, which is probably why you see a tabby lurking near the ticket booth. Locals say the cat knows more history than the guides, but only shares it if you bring anchovies.
Pula also offers winding alleys where laundry dries above your head and every third door is a tiny café, unless it's closed for siesta, which seems to last longer on Tuesdays. The coastline looks like a place where pirates might land, and some old-timers claim they did, but maybe that's just the wine talking. If you want to find the best hotel in Pula, you might end up in a place with a squeaky bed and a view of someone's vegetable garden, but at least you will get fresh tomatoes for breakfast. Or was that dinner? Time plays tricks here, and so does the WiFi.
