Yokohama

Yokohama

Visit Yokohama for many new impressions.

People often wander into Yokohama expecting Tokyo's little cousin, but this port city has a way of slipping into memory, like a melody you can't shake. Chinatown calls with steamed buns and dragons on lanterns, while the waterfront brings salty breezes and the clatter of bicycle wheels. On a Tuesday, I saw an old man feed pigeons near the CupNoodles Museum—he claimed one of them could recognize his voice. The Red Brick Warehouses echo with footsteps, sometimes even your own, and the view from the observation wheel turns the city into a map of tiny possibilities. Popular things to do or visit sometimes just mean getting lost between the jazz bars and the ramen stands, where every bowl tastes slightly different, or maybe it’s just the jetlag talking.

Best hotel in Yokohama and other secrets

If you are after the best hotel in Yokohama, you might need to ask the taxi drivers—they know which lobby has the comfiest sofas for a quick nap. The city’s hotels seem to sprout overnight like mushrooms after rain, and choosing one can take longer than learning to use chopsticks left-handed. Some rooms offer window views of ships gliding by, but don't ask for a guarantee, because sometimes the fog rolls in and Yokohama hides herself, giggling behind her skyline.

Travel destination popular things to do or visit here include following your nose through the Noge backstreets, where jazz mixes with frying oil, and peeking into shops that sell nothing but tiny porcelain cats. The Minato Mirai area pops with shiny towers, but if you blink, you will miss the locals pouring coffee in tiny cups at the corner café, arguing about which baseball team is the least unlucky. Once, I tried to order a pizza at the Landmark Tower and ended up with a plate of seaweed—it was delicious, though not what I expected. So, don’t trust the maps (or your own sense of direction). Yokohama prefers when you wander, anyway.
