The Hague

The Hague

Visiting The Hague brings the sea to your doorstep and the city to your shoes.

People often search for travel destination popular things to do or visit in The Hague, but sometimes forget to look up and see the birds making circles above the Peace Palace. It is a place where cyclists ring their bells with more vigor than a brass band on King’s Day, and if you listen closely near the Binnenhof, you might hear echoes of old debates blending with the chatter of tourists who think they’re somewhere in Amsterdam. Do not try the herring if you are not ready for the full Dutch experience, unless you like surprises that smell fishy. The best hotel in The Hague sometimes has a lobby piano that only plays when nobody is around, or so the night porter claims. Also, beware of the wind – it sneaks around corners and rearranges your hair without asking permission.

Popular things to do or visit in The Hague – and the best hotel secrets

People looking for travel destination popular things to do or visit in The Hague usually start with the Mauritshuis, and yes, the paintings seem to stare back at you, especially if you squint. But once, a friend of mine got lost between the portraits and ended up making friends with a security guard who told him the story of the time a pigeon flew in through the window and caused a commotion worthy of Rembrandt. Scheveningen beach is another top pick, where the sand sticks to your shoes for weeks and the sea breeze might just steal your hat if you’re not careful. If you stay by the pier past sunset, you could spot a group of locals racing eachother on rollerblades – or maybe just racing the wind, who knows.

The best hotel in The Hague does not always have the fanciest lobby, but sometimes the breakfast is so good you forget to visit the city at all. Once, I overheard someone claim the secret to a perfect stay is to always ask the receptionist about their favorite pancake place. The answer changes daily, but the pancakes never disappoint (except, perhaps, on Tuesdays). And if you ever see a bike with a basket full of tulips parked outside, it might belong to the chef, or the mayor, or just someone who likes tulips a lot. Don’t forget to check under the bed for stray stroopwafels – they seem to roll everywhere in The Hague.
