Travel destination popular things to do or visit in Washington sometimes forget to mention the joy of counting the steps on Capitol Hill (spoiler: nobody gets the same number twice). If you find yourself at a loss, just follow the people with cameras or the ones arguing about cherry blossoms versus tulip trees. The best hotel in Washington is often the one with the breakfast bagels that do not taste like cardboard, or so a local once told me over a cup of coffee that was suspiciously lukewarm.

One day, I joined a walking tour led by a guide with a hat that looked like it had seen all the presidents, and maybe even impeached one. He swore that you can't say you've visited until you have lost your map and asked a jogger for directions—who then gives you a running commentary about the best brunch, as if that was the real Monument. There is a rhythm to the city, like a jazz riff on the Potomac, and if you listen closely, you might even find yourself tapping your feet to the tune, or, at the very least, tripping over a scooter. In the end, nobody remembers the exact number of museums, but you will remember the feeling of trying to see them all in one afternoon (advice: don't do it).
