Wake up early, and the sun seems to yawn alongside you. The night market opens, lanterns swinging like lazy beetles, and suddenly you’re tasting things you cannot pronounce. Somewhere, a taxi driver will try to convince you his cousin’s boat is faster than the wind, and maybe, just maybe, you’ll believe him after a coconut coffee. Fishermen chatter near Dinh Cau, claiming yesterday’s catch was bigger, though their grins say otherwise. Try not to trip over your own feet at the pepper plantations – the ground is uneven, and so are the stories.
Phú Quốc’s beaches, they stretch out, sometimes crowded, sometimes just you and your thoughts (plus a few stray dogs eyeing your banh mi). People come for snorkeling, but leave with sand in their shoes and a phone full of sunset photos that look suspiciously like everyone else’s. The best hotel in Phú Quốc, well, it’s the one where the shower works and the gecko sings you to sleep, at least that’s what my neighbor swore by. Oh, and if you see a sign for 'fresh urchin,' just remember to ask if it's still moving before you say yes, or you might get a surprise you didn't bargain forr.
