Wineries around Šibenik and why you should visit them

Before visiting Croatia, we never thought that we could find lovely wines there. We were wrong. The Dalmatian region of Croatia is a wine lover's paradise, offering a unique blend of history, culture, and breathtaking landscapes. This coastal area, known for its picturesque islands and ancient cities, is also home to some of Croatia's finest vineyards.

About the Dalmatia wine region

Dalmatia, one of Croatia's four wine regions, spans from Zadar to the Konavle municipality in the south. This area has a rich history of vine cultivation, with the earliest written records originating here. Dalmatia is known for its preference for red wine production, particularly from grapes grown in beautiful but challenging landscapes, such as steep and remote slopes.

Grape varieties in Dalmatia

The region is famous for indigenous grape varieties like Plavac mali and Pošip, with many lesser-known types like Kujundžuša, Plavina, Maraština, Bogdanuša, and Debit gaining recognition among local winemakers.

Plavac mali, considered a descendant of the Tribidrag (Crljenak or Zinfandel) variety, thrives on the slopes of the Pelješac Peninsula and the islands of Hvar and Brač, areas renowned for their stunning views of the Adriatic Sea. The island of Korčula is also significant, being the origin of the Grk and Pošip varieties, known for producing high-quality white wines. Other notable varieties include Babić and Debit, cultivated around Šibenik, Primošten, and Nadin, along with international red varieties found in the Dubrovnik hinterland and Konavle.

Dubrovnik Malvasia, from the far south, is unique for its dry and sweet wines made from slightly dried berries. In recent years, small winemakers across Dalmatia have adopted advanced technology to enhance their offerings, gaining international acclaim for their wines
